After some discussion in this thread about keeping better track of utilities and tutorials, I've started to put together a spreadsheet that details what Morrowind tutorials are out there, who made them, where they are now, what format(s) they are in, and what category of information they cover.

This list is intended to include tutorials that are specifically designed with Morrowind in mind, or that are written by Morrowind modders. For this reason, it leaves out many tutorials that give instructions on specific modelling and texturing tools and programs. If you are looking for tutorials related to such programs, I recommend bjam's modder's toolbox, which is organzied by program. Also check out redwoodtreesprite's site--her Morrowind Modders' Resource Directory contains a list of free programs and accompanying tutorials. Links to both of them are in the Overview Section below.

Thanks to some really hard work by bjam and many others, a lot of preparing the spreadsheet and creating this list is pretty easy cutting and pasting. When it's done I'll release the spreadsheet, as well as see about improving distribution of those tutorials that people care to share or redistribute. In the meanwhile, I'm posting a list of the tutorials that I've recorded so far.

What would be particularly helpful is for those who have used these resources to comment on them (constructively, of course!), so that it's possible to post tutorial descriptions just like mod descriptions. Things to consider are;

- Is the tutorial for the beginning, intermediate, or advanced texturer, modeller, mod-user, etc.?
- What skills does the tutorial teach (if not obvious from the title)?
- How might those skills or tasks be useful for other projects? (for example, if an icon tutorial uses the GIMP, it might also be useful for those trying to get a handle on the GIMP. If a book image tutorial explains alpha channels . . . it could help those looking to understand alpha channels. Etc.)

And now I will attempt to stop talking, and get on with the list. talker.gif

QUOTE(Larissa Mem @ Aug 18 2006, 01:45 PM) *

After some discussion in this thread about keeping better track of utilities and tutorials, I've started to put together what is already a frighteningly long spreadsheet that details what tutorials are out there, who made them, where they are now, what format(s) they are in, and what category of MW information they teach the user about (for example, topics include CS: Interiors; CS: NPCs; Texturing; Modelling; Mod Installation, etc.).

Thanks to some really hard work by bjam and others, a lot of this work is pretty easy cutting and pasting. When it's done I'll release that document, too, as well as see about improving distribution of those tutorials that people care to share or redistribute. In the meanwhile, I'm posting a list of the tutorials that I've recorded (about a third of the ones I know about . . . blink.gif . . . ).

What would be particularly helpful in the long run is for those who have used some of these resources to comment (constructively, of course!) on them, so that it's possible to post tutorial descriptions just like mod descriptions. Things to consider are;

- Is the tutorial for the beginning, intermediate, or advanced texturer, modeller, mod-user, etc.?
- What topics does the tutorial cover (if not obvious from the title)?
- What skills does the tutorial teach (if not obvious from the title)?
- How might those skills or tasks be useful for other projects? (for example, if an icon tutorial uses the GIMP, it might also be useful for those trying to get a handle on the GIMP. If a book image tutorial explains alpha channels . . . it could help those looking to understand alpha channels. Etc.)

As you can see from my examples, I understand more about texturing and image tutorials than anything else, which is why for the moment they are dominating this list. Folks who can help me figure out what scripting, dialogue, and modelling tutorials are useful--as well as which ones are perhaps not current--have my gratitude.

And now I will attempt to stop talking, and get on with the list. talker.gif

List goes here.

'Zat work, Yacoby? smile.gif

Yeh, thanks
Just to clarify Larissa Mem, should tutorials not listed here be reported in this thread or the other one? (Of course you need more biggrin.gif ). What about modder 'resources' like Srikandi's TESCS Item Index? (i.e. PDFs and other docs rather than NIFs and the like). Thanks for doing this btw.
Good point, Dragon32 . . . thanks! It doesn't matter where you put them as I'll be going back over the other thread--but yes, for specific items rather than a discussion of a general approach to them, it's probably best to start moving things over here.

And yes, things like SriKandi's Item Index definitely "count" . . . I'll probably divide those off from the "general" CS category so people can see them better. (That's actually one that desperately needs to get back into better circulation. 932.gif)

Again, in a day or so this list should be about twice as long from what bjam (he got what's at Thanos Tower and the Planet, and I'm checking Tamriel Rebuilt, a few modders' forums, and psychodog studios . . . which could fill pages of its own.) blink.gif So if you're thinking "where is SirLuthor's race creation tutorial?!!?!!?" . . . It's coming. wink.gif [Actually . . . where IS Sir Luthor's race creation tutorial, besides on my hard drive . . . banghead.gif I have the feeling we are doing this just in time, or maybe not . . . ] But if you know of places other than those listed in the other thread that have tutorials or resources, that would be great. Or if you have a specific favorite tutorial, go ahead and post it. fing34.gif
Okay, I have a dumb question . . . is glowmapping something you do in MAX??? unsure.gif Would folks classify it as modelling or texturing . . . or does it really matter? (Maybe I should read Korana's FAQ . . . )

Okay, I have a dumb question . . . is glowmapping something you do in MAX??? unsure.gif

Yeh, you can do it in MAX, although now there are other programs you can do it in (NIBLE, NIFSkope, posibly blender now)

QUOTE
Would folks classify it as modelling or texturing . . .

It dunno, as it seems to come under both.

You glowmap enable the mesh
You need a new glowmap texture for the mesh

etc
Trey Leaven's put together a tuturial package and posted it on my site here:
http://cody.erekson.org/cgi-bin/index.cgi?...=mutil&id=1

You might want to check that out and make sure there isn't anything in there that you haven't already collected.

Thank you for doing this BTW!
Thanks Fliggerty--Trey's collection gave me a bee in my bonnet about this I think. I'll post the link to a list of its contents . . . it's really good one-stop shopping for many of these things, especially the basics you really need to start modding. (I'll post the link to the download in the thread. biggrin.gif)

Do you know if Trey put them into PDF for himself or found them as PDFs? bonk.gif Keeping formats straight is confusing . . .

Thanks Yacoby about the glowmap stuff. blink.gif I think the modelling is the area with the biggest obvious gaps at the moment, but we'll see. 932.gif

Larissa Mem, thank you for the great post, have saved the thread as a .mht.

Thanks for the time effort you put into this.

Does anything in the modeling tutorials apply to Blender?
Glad it's helpful to some. smile.gif

As for things like Blender . . . I was hoping some modellers could give some advice. unsure.gif If you are looking for tutorials related to specific programs, you might want to look at bjam's modder's toolbox (see the "Overview" section that I just added to the first post.) His toolbox is organized by computer program, so anything that's there can be located by finding the program you are looking for. Also check redwoodtreesprite's site--hers is organized the same way. This list is tutorials that are specifically designed with Morrowind in mind, or by Morrowind modders, and so it leaves out many that help you learn to use certain texturing and modelling programs in general.

Hope that explains why there ARE gaps. wink.gif

This tutorial in PDF form, along with the following, are all in the compilation on Fliggerty's site. Other than that, they are not available that I know of, except where your mod detecting skills can root them out:

- Calislahn's Dialogue Tutorial (Both are on her site but for me the PDFs are corrupted).
- Sir Luthor's Race Creation Tutorial.

No, I have them, and anyone else can download them wrapped up as part of the LARGE compilation by Trey Leavens on Fliggerty's site. Skydiver's Quest Tutorial is ALSO in that download. (I'll just repost the contents list in this thread along with authors.)

However, that's the only place these guys currently are that I know of. They aren't anywhere as STANDALONE downloads. So you have to download 35MB of tutorials even if only want to get Sir Luthor's 2 page Race Creation Tutorial. sad.gif

It's a problem of access. 932.gif There are MANY tuts that need some salvage or redistribution work done, but these are the ones in direst need of it at the moment, I think. I was jumping the gun a bit on the "what do we do once we know what's out there" issue . . . but it did come up with regard to Skydiver's tut. Something to return to when the list is complete.

Sorry, somehow missed the comprehensive guide to Alphas . . . thanks. fing34.gif Excellent. And I'll look through the list of tuts--Danke Shoen. dance.gif

Edit: Okay, just heard from Calislahn and her tutorials are back on line. bubbly.gif
Well, the major download sites have all indicated their willingness to assist with this. TESSource created a new section where tutorials can be placed or summarized and made available for download. IIRC the Planet was tidying up the Tutorials section. The ElricM response was similarly helpful. And there must be individuals who would be willing to help. That has been my experience anyway.

932.gif

Everything is as I found it, I have no way of making a PDF. and i think some of those smaller ones without pictures really don't need to be PDF, that just makes them larger files. If they could be re-typed into html or even ascii it'd be a smaller download and less space on the drive i think.

When replying in this thread, I noticed bjam's list of milkshape tutorials was lacking detritus' tutorial,
http://detritus.silgrad.com/mstut_modeling.html
And Earth_Wyrm's sites has a bit on milkshape.

I like how bjam's modelling tutorial list is seperated by program, and include list of all available required plugins.

I think it makes sense to include plugins in a tutorial list, some one reading tutorials is new and probably needs to know they need the plugins.

there is no link (anywhere) for the 3dsmax importer? ( the actuall importer, not dongle's tutorial )
QUOTE(Larissa Mem @ Aug 23 2006, 12:41 AM) *

Other than that, they are not available that I know of, except where your mod detecting skills can root them out:

- SriKandi's Item Index - SriKandi's Skinning tutorial.
- Calislahn's Housebuilding Tutorial
- Calislahn's Dialogue Tutorial (Both are on her site but for me the PDFs are corrupted).
- Sir Luthor's Race Creation Tutorial.

SirLuthor's tutorial is still available from his site;
http://www.freewebs.com/sirluthor/downloads.htm

And Silver_Falcon's Alpha tutorial is available from Elricm;
http://www.elricm.com/mods.php?mod=751
Thanks, Ronin49, Trey, OldeCowe. Been asleep at the wheel on this one lately but will get back to updating it before too long. Some cosmetic changes today. wink.gif
I've started adding descriptions to the list of tutorials. List still isn't finished (if "finished" is even possible. wink_smile.gif) Contributions (descriptions, comments, recommendations) always welcome . . . if I haven't responded or added a tutorial, it's just because I'm getting there slowly. blush.gif
An update:

1. Added half a dozen tutorials to this list
2. Added some descriptions
3. Organized the spreadsheet so the list and the spreadsheet I'm making (which folks will be able to download) are a closer match. (There are 130 tutorials on the spreadsheet. dead.gif)
4. Uploaded SriKandi's stuff to TesSource and will see about hosting it elsewhere; the Planet unfortunately doesn't like my uploads. jpshakehead.gif

If someone else would be willing to upload them to PES, I'd be grateful. You can get them from existing links or the rapidshare links Ronin49 kindly provided above, which should still be working.

5. Still to do: two or three major forums still to finish mining for stuff . . . . not to mention everything else I've missed. unsure.gif

New links! biggrin.gif

SriKandi's Item Index
SriKandi's Skinning Tutorial

More suggestions very much welcome, even if I seem to be ignoring them--I may just be quite slow in getting around to looking at them. poke2.gif

Edit: Totally rewrote this post. Twice. blink.gif
A small bump to this . . . Also, does anyone use this method to texture? Nifskope plus an image program? Pros and cons--when does one use it? (If one doesn't have a UV map? unsure.gif) Would MW modders need this or is this primarily suited for Oblivionites?

Thanks to anyone who can inform me. smile.gif

I'll try to add a few more from the spreadsheet to the list today and tomorrow. 932.gif
WOW, you can get NifSkope to generate UV maps??!!

That's fantastic information, THANK YOU!! biggrin.gif

Did you get the requested help and specifically what did you need put up at the Planet, preferably with a link?
Thank you. The below are all PDFs and you are supposed to now be able to upload them to the tutorials section as mods; if there are any problems I suppose the best thing to do is to contact me and I will contact APY.

These things can go to the Planet if folks could lend a hand:

SriKandi's TESCS Item Index
- Description on site at TESSource

- SriKandi's Skinning Tutorial- Description on site at TESSource

- SriKandi's Dialogue Tutorial- Description on site at TESSource

- Calislahn's How to Build a House

- Calislahn's Dialogue Basics

also since Lady Eternity's site has closed . . .

- Lady Eternity Physiqued Animation, a How-To Guide

- Lady Eternity Segmented Animation, A How-To Guide

If whoever manages to do this could PM me with links or post them, I can add them to the thread and the spreadsheet. Thanks in advance. 932.gif

Edit: Kateri, so glad it was helpful. Yeah, I think that seems like a useful technique too . . .
i wonder if the pinned threads could be updated. i know i don't send people there anymore. too many broken links.

great work here!!!
Thanks, SciMuse. The mods have told me that if when this list is done and if when it gets hosted somewhere, they can put it on the list of pinned threads, so perhaps that will help some. Meanwhile it's good to know it's of use to folks--a good incentive for me to keep working on it instead of procrastinating until 2009. wink.gif

I've taken the liberty to host decompiled ( plain HTML wink.gif ) versions of Srikandi's TESCS Item Index, Dialogue Tutorial and Skinning Tutorial on my Hideout. You'll find them in the Guides section.

This is great news. When I got the time I was going to see if I could figure out how to do that. blink.gif I figured it should have been easy . . . figures that you know how. wink_smile.gif Thanks for taking some initiative to keep these things easily available. smile.gif

In any list, errors are bound to creep in. What you have done so far is WONDERFUL!! These are resources that need to remain available to modders, and I greatly (VERY GREATLY) appreciate all your hard work.

Thank You Very Much! fing34.gif

It is easy. smile.gif

Microsoft offers a free program that does the work with a mouse click or two. It is called the HTML Help Workshop and you can get it here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....lpDownloads.asp

DarkOne has the tutorial section up and going http://www.tessource.net/tutorials/
I'm glad I accidentally stumbled across this thread--don't know how I missed it! Lots of good links to useful information. The just-fiddle-with-it-until-you-figure-it-out method can be fun sometimes, but it does get old. Thanks for all this effort.

Should I upload all the tutorials docs I have? I would think if someone took the time to make them they wouldn't mind them being available. I have several max tutorials for morrowind as well. unsure.gif
I'd upload them Trey, the Morrowind section looks a bit bare.

Excellent resource, Larissa Mem!
Belated thanks Trey for anything you've added . . . overwhelming quantities of RL have put additions and updates to this list on indefinite hold.

A small bump though for new folks . . . might still be useful. I added the rather interesting thread on how to make interior cells that behave like exterior cells.

Also, Gaticus designed a macro that would allow folks who have Photoshop to create icons more quickly. You can find it on his website, here, along with a quick explanation about how to make icons and use the tool.

Hi, bjam! action-smiley-030.gif
Heya Larissa, I just used this list to find a particular tutorial (One of Lady E's) again, and t'was nice to see a newish post by you in it. Hope you're coping well with your 'overwhelming quantities of RL' smile.gif
action-smiley-030.gif
Hi E_W wavey.gif. Lots o' RL, but enough time to update things now and again--updated psychodog tut links, now that the place has changed its location. All the more reason to eventually get these tuts uploaded, permissions permitting.

Edit: Figured out how to save psychodog tuts after OldeCowe told me it should just work as normal. blush.gif
They changed the site from .net to .com just switch that and you'll find them again. There has been resent... unpleasantness, involving linking directly to their forums though so I'd recomend against doing so. And probably the site itself until the matter is properly sorted and adressed.
Bumping this for the sake of my thread cull paranoia.
Useful list. Arigato.

I'll throw this at anyone I find asking for it.
i am bored. is there any particular type of tutorial that needs more links? i am a decent googler. i have some free time to hunt if you need it.

Psychodog Studios has video tutorials for beginners in modelling and texturing . . . they are short (5-7 minutes) and may interest particularly those with fast downloads as they run 7-14mb each

Zenorf Video Tutorial 1: Modelling (Very Basic)
Xaphod Video Tutorial 2: UVW Mapping
Neuman Video Tutorial 5: Exporting 1 & 2

Not sure it has been reported, but all the psychodogstudios video tutorials links in their forum are broken... sad.gif

PS: and thanks for this thread! smile.gif

I am not trawling for new resources but happy to post them if they do exist . . . However, I realized while changing from one computer to another that I HAVE all these tuts on my hard drive(s)(s)(s) and if anyone would like them, they are welcome to them.

I just haven't been around in so long I've forgotten how to use YouSendIt, etc. blush.gif
