I am starting this thread to hopefully build a nice list of Mod Hosting Sites, File Mirror locations and Image hosting locations for modders on a shoe-string budget. This list will also have a little bit of info about each one.

Please feel free to let me know about other places and I will update this list. Once the list is fairly stable, I will place this list on a wiki site to be maintained and accessible to the entire community.

Anywhere with the word "unknown" means I do not know the answer. Help with this info would be great.

FYI - As I've been adding and updating this list, I have noticed a ton of "Requires Free Registration" so I'm going to list this as an understood assumption for everything unless otherwise noted to keep the text to a minimum rather than turning into clutter.

Assumptions

These assumptions can be made for everything listed here unless otherwise noted.
  • Site Requires Registration for uploaders
  • Site Registration is Free
  • Usage of the site is free (otherwise it won't be on this list)

Nice list conan lon, didnt know about all of those.
chris 07, I wouldn't know about most of those either if it wasn't for people using them here on these forums.

I would like some feedback by the people that use these sites (especially the ones where I have question marks) and I'd also like to know if there are any other resources (sites) available to us. I recently started using PhotoBucket since TESSource's ImageShare went down. I found it to be VERY nice and I kick myself in the tush for not using it earlier.

When I get enough information gathered about these and other resources, I will probably put together a tutorial on how to go about publishing a mod. Hopefully it will make things easier for the new modder as well as expand the horizons of existing modders by having a checklist / guide as well as many options to fit their needs.

One of those tips in the guide will be about getting and using a public email account when registering at sites that require email and your ability to open those emails. A good option is Google's GMail which is extremely nice...especially if you use Firefox with the GMail add-in that lets you know when new mail arrives and you can check it with a single click of the button (no login required)

Thanks,
LHammonds

Conan_Lon I use 4shared alot..so..

1) None that I know
2) yes..just add links can be slow at time because of banners and things like that..
3) 50mb limit on uploads..
4) once you uploaded something there you can reupdate the same file once more without having to create a new link to it..
Hi Conan, I don't know if this is the same one as the Filefront you put but the setupo looks different and you might be able to add it to the list:

http://elderscrolls.filefront.com/

http://elderscrolls.filefront.com/

It's the same FileFront. The main difference / confusion is this:

1) When you sign up for an account, you can upload anything you want and have full control over your upload(s) but it is only located under your folder.
2) You can "submit" your uploaded file to be placed under a specific game section but once it is done, you loose all control over that file and cannot make updates to it...but people browsing the site would find the archive in that game section.

I don't prefer to use it like a mod distribution point like PES or TESNexus. I'd rather use it as a file mirror and have places like PES and TESNexus have links to that site as an alternate download location.

EDIT: Corepc, thanks for the info. I've updated the OP.

Thanks,
LHammonds

This is a very good resource Conan_Lon. It would be great to have this "stickied" so it doesn't get shuffled in a day or two. smile.gif Will placing it on a Wiki site mean it will be accessible here?

I checked out that site and it doesn't seem very "intuitive" for uploading mods. Looks like it requires a special upload tool and to be packaged into a "mashup" for whatever that is.

No, it doesn't need to get stickied. A simple link in the Oblivion Mod FAQ would be good enough (which is already stickied) but only after this list finds a permanent home.

Yes, via a link. I would imagine the best place would be inside the Oblivion Mods FAQ as a link. The Construction Set wiki seems like the logical place which is also accessible inside the Construction Set by clicking Help in the menu bar.

Thanks for the info but I cannot read German. Can you let me know the details about hosting a mod on that site?

We have descriptions and screens, as well as a 1-10 voting functionality, but no comments. Most famous international download is Blood&Mud Dirt Deluxe Anglais, which is quite a big download, and we've had no capacity problems with it.
Elim, thanks for the info. I added the site under Mod Hosting Sites.

Any other places that are used as File Mirrors or for Image Storage (like PhotoBucket)?

Aw.. no reply.. cry_smile.gif

However I suggest Mediafire. It's a file mirror with direct-link downloads as well as an Image Storage site.
To upload anything you don't need to create an account (anonymous running). It's enough to remember the link to your own file to share it. The image viewer is pretty as well.

dyfed_99 and trollf, thanks for pointing me to those sites. I checked them out and added them to the list.

Are there any other File Mirror and Image Sharing sites that ya'll know about and use?

Thanks,

Don't forget about Wiwiland, its a French site, but has been around for quite a while. When I was helping Galahaut with the Morrowind Mod Wiki, we found alot of files there, that had disappeared elsewhere. Unfortunately, I can't really say what the specifics are, as I can't read a lick of French. Maybe someone else knows?
NZdawghaus, thanks for the info. I cannot read French either so I'll just put all question marks beside it...hoping that somebody will fill us in on the details. wink.gif

Hmmm...I think I will change the questions marks to something else and color them brightly to catch people's attention.

About wiwiland, I can't read much french either but I could find out mods are send by email and tested before uploaded to the site. For oblivion mods you have to email to oblivion@wiwiland.com, for Morrowind mods that is modules@wiwiland.com. There are no file restrictions mentioned.

You can download by clicking the box icon on a download page, not hard to find even if you don't speak french. Download managers are allowed, I could even get my maximum speed (320 kb) without.

Qaazaaq, thanks. I've updated wiwiland info.

Ayleid_people, thanks. I'm (slowly) looking into each one and updating the 1st post with what I find.

I guess when this list is pretty much done, I should open a poll for each section to see which ones are rated the best (or most used). As it stands right now, I have them ordered pretty much how I would use them but that's no guarantee as to what the next guy/gal would prefer.

I dont know about you guys, but I would NEVER (that is NEVER capitalized) suggest anyone to use rapidshare for mod mirrors.

That service is a money scam, if you need to download anything more than one file there you're screwed. From there its just them begging for money for a service that you can find free elsewhere.

I'd open my server to public uploading before I saw the community switch to such storage places. (Although my server www.disp0sable.org does offer free image storage if you register on the Gallery with no limits of any sort.)

** edit , just upgraded the Coppermine gallery and found out my pHP is outdated, so now I have to wait for my web server to upgrade that before it is working again..**
You need to be a little more open minded about GameFlood, my friend. The mashups are something entirely different from mods. I have uploaded seven of my mods there with little effort. I think that there are several good features at GameFlood that can be used to great advantage by modders, one of which is being able to "publish" (their term) private mods. Ideal for betas and "in-house" testing before a public release. The site is run by TurboSquid and their tech staff responds to your emails. Think the site deserves more than your brush-off. BTW The WinZip requirement can be circumvented by simply packing a WinRaR or 7-Zip file into a WinZip archive (which I just did for my Wogs! update

EDIT: Oh, by the way, GameFlood holds contests for mods and the TR team won first prize (think $3,000) for their Map One. Max Tael's Natural Environments was second place.

Open minded? I created an account and tried to figure out how to upload a test file. Twas the only one I tested so far that I got frustrated and just gave up on. If I have trouble trying to figure something out quickly, then I would only assume other would also be confused about how to use it.

Sounds like you are circumventing a standard that they are trying to set in place. Any site requiring .zip format is obviously trying to focus on compatibility and ease of extraction rather than saving bandwidth and space.

Again, I tried it and didn't like it. What more can I say.

It was not ignored. I'm creating IDs and checking out each and every site that is posted here...I currently have not finished going through Ayleid_people's list which was prior to yours.

I got sick over the weekend and the narcs that I'm on totally mess with my head. I usually only have time on the weekends to do things on the computer and this weekend got shot because of that.

Sorry...but I will eventually check it out.

For RS.com, add that the download limitations are extended to 25GB per 5 days with premium account. I have one and very much like it. It is worth having one. And also it is very easy to upload files with same names, the old ones don't get deleted, aren't replaced with the new ones. Upload space is unlimited.

I assume you're talking about RapidShare.com?

I'm not too interested in what Premium/Pay-For accounts can do since you can pay just about anyone to host a file.

This list is primarily for modders on a shoe-string budget since there doesn't seem to be a good list of many "free" places to host Oblivion files.

Sounds great, man. I'll definitely add this to the FAQ whenever you're ready. Just let me know.

Might be worth mentioning in your list that imageshack is considerably slower than photobucket for the end-user viewing screenshots (probably because they insert ad pop-ups, which is itself a drawback). Not sure about other restrictions they may have.

Photobucket does have a few restrictions, though:

Maximum Storage: 1Gb free (5Gb with pro subscription)
Upload Limitations: 1Mb per image if larger than 1024 x 768 (2Mb per image with pro)
Download Limitations: 25Gb/mo free (unlimited with pro)

Might also be nice to clarify that PES requires admin approval prior to the initial listing, but subsequent updates to the listing (and new files added to it) go through immediately. Basically this gives you full control after an initial admin approval delay.
bump for such a fine and informative thread :]

This will be helpful for the tutorial I have planned which details the steps to create, upload and publicize a mod.

Thanks,

First Post updated.

Brand-spanking new hosting site added called TTS Data Center.

I'm uploading several of my mods there as an additional basket to store my eggs. wink.gif I will then update all the mirrors on TESNexus to point to that site as well.

It may not be a new TESNexus but it can at least serve as a more permanent file mirror that can also stand on it's own two legs. It is just so irritating to have my file mirrors expire after 30 days of inactivity on RapidShare and similar sites.

Thanks to raziel23x for finding and setting up this resource for us.

You should add TinyPic to the list of image hosts.

Name: TinyPic (owned by Photobucket)
URL: http://tinypic.com/index.php
Maximum Storage: No account, No membership, free public upload
Upload Limitations: No animated gifs
Download Limitations: photo held for one year and then deleted
Easy for Downloads: Best used for layouts.
Easy for Uploaders: Yes
Easy to Update/Maintain: no, if you forget the name your image was given on upload you may never find it again amongst the millions of images in their database, so copy and paste the address to a safe location.
